Advantages of Infrared Heat Panels

In this article we explore some of the main advantages of infrared heat panels.

Infrared heating panels have been growing in popularity in the UK recent years. Although relatively new to the UK market, they have gained a sizeable slice of the heating market in countries such as Germany and France.

The up-tick in demand is driven by a number of factors, not least the tangible advantages that they have other other forms of heating. But before we look at the advantages, lets clear up what infrared panel heaters are.

What are infrared panel heaters?

Infrared heating panels emit heat via infrared rays (invisible to the naked eye) and provide a direct and gentle form of heating. The panels are thin and stylish in their design - can be fitted on walls, ceilings or simply used as a plug in heater.

Advantages

If you're in the market for a new heating system, then it pays to do your homework to ensure that you make the best choice you can. Below are just some of the advantages of infrared panels.

  • Almost instant. With traditional central heating systems, you wait a long time for a room to feel toasty. Two main factors lie behind this. Firstly, it takes time for your boiler to heat the water to a high enough temperature and to pump it round to the house's radiators. Secondly, because central heating using convection to heat a room, it is the ceiling area that gets warm first. By contrast, warm-up times are a thing of the past with infrared panels. You'll start to feel warm almost immediately after you turn the panel on.
  • Natural. The heaters transmit harmless infrared energy, in the same way as the sun does. This infrared energy turns into heat only when it comes into contact with an object or person. Unlike traditional heaters, which tend to rely on convection, infrared heaters do not heat the atmosphere or have heat blown away in the wind.
  • Zero emissions. Electric infrared panel heaters can make a positive contribution to a low carbon home or commercial setting. They produce no direct carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions and so, when coupled with renewably-generated electricity, they are a great choice for those wanting to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Highly efficient. Infrared is a remarkably energy efficient form of heating where energy conversion rates are around 98%. Typically an infrared heater is 40% of the size of a conventional heater yet will still produce the same level of warmth. This means a 400W infrared heater for example will produce the same amount of heat as a 1kW conventional heater.
  • Controllable. Dividing areas into zones with separate controls for heating is easily achieved with infrared heating panels, as directed, focused infrared heat warms everything in its range without losing heat to other spaces. When combined with the Tansun time lag switches or motion detectors, the panels provide even more controllability. With Tansun zoning and control it is easy to optimise energy efficiency, slim down heating bills and boast a truly eco-friendly heating system.
  • Cheaper. Infrared heat panels are much cheaper to buy and to install than new carbon alternatives such as heat pumps.
  • Easy to install. Infrared heating panels are highly cost-effective to install as they don’t require pipework to function. Instead an electrician can easily install them. They can be wall-hung or, if wall space is at a premium, ceiling-mounted.
  • Silent. Infrared heating panels have the advantage of being completely silent, so install a heating panel and you'll not get any of those annoying knocks & clicks you get with water-based heating systems.
  • Better for allergy sufferers. Traditional forms of heating that use convention throw up dust and other particles as they heat the room. This is because they make the air move because of rising warm air. In contrast, infrared heating does not increase airflow so no dust or allergens are circulated around the space being heated.

Three panel heaters have been developed by Tansun in different sizes to cater for numerous areas. The Iridium Series 600 (300W)900 (610W) and 1200 (785W), are lightweight and extra-slim radiant heating panels. Standard panel colours are white or black finish but Tansun can create the panels in most RAL colour options to help blend in with particular environments and colour schemes.

All of Tansun’s products are made in the UK and are designed using premium components. The company has been established for 35 years and pioneered the concept of radiant electric heaters alongside Philips technology. Tansun has the largest range of commercial, industrial and domestic radiant heaters in the world, providing maintenance-free, safe and healthy radiant heaters for many different types of heating applications.
